We Can Do This!
To prepare the way for the ratification of the new START treaty, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and other agreements to reduce the numbers and dangers of nuclear weapons, it is important for every possible person to become active on the issue.

The best place to start is to speak with your friends and neighbors about nuclear weapons. Because nukes have been around for more than 60 years, too many people take them for granted or are in denial about the threat they pose to us all. Share with them peace pamphlets, articles from newspapers and magazines, or this site. Be positive about supporting the Obama efforts to change nuclear policy and negotiate with Russia. Don’t be shy: remember, that polls show about three out of every four Americans want a nuclear-free world.

Track Your Senators
Keep an eye on your senators and their peace voting records. You can learn about their votes from peace organizations who will send you their records. (See Resources) Maybe you can get your church, union or other organization to write a letter to your Senators about this wonderful opportunity to reduce nuclear dangers.

Join a peace organization
Some are listed in the Resources section of this site. National organizations generally ask you to support them so that they can represent you in washington. They may also ask you to circulate petitions or contact your representatives on peace and anti-nuclear issues. MoveOn is also helpful in listing peace activities across the nation.

Local peace organizations need workers and supporters too. You can help by attending meetings, occasional demonstrations and work sessions, such as helping to write or mail the newsletter. They may ask you to distribute circulars in your neighborhood, visit your representative, help with public meetings and keep in touch with your senators.

If there is no local peace group in your community, you may want to speak with your friends and neighbors about starting a Peace Club in your community. Once you have a few people, set up a public meeting, announce it well in advance and plan every step. (You will find more about Peace Clubs in the Resources section)

Organizing for Clout
One of the ways to reach a lot of people and get the attention of your representatives is to work politically. Too many incumbents run unopposed or against very weak candidates. It is important to support those who will support peace actions or to support new candidates to replace incumbents who support the nuclear complex. (See more about political aorganizing in the Resources Section.)

The people who care must support each other and find the time to let their representatives know that Peace and nuclear disarmament are their critical issues. We mustn’t leave the threat of nuclear weapons to the next generation; they don’t deserve it!
