A Chance for Change
Now we have an unusual opportunity to change the dangerous Bush nuclear policy that has poisoned our relations abroad, sickened our people at home and stimulated a new nuclear arms race.

The Shultz, Perry, Kissinger disarmament statements in the Wall Street Journal have received support from hundreds of our foreign policy and military leaders. President Obama has said that he will work for nuclear reductions. They are guided by the new reality that developing nations now can acquire the materials and know-how to build nuclear  weapons. This  has increased the danger of proliferation and the possibility of a disastrous nuclear exchange.

A large majority of Americans would like to see a nuke-free world. Russia,China and others have indicated a willingness to work for disarmament.

We now have a chance to make serious progress toward the abolition of nuclear weapons. President Obama has met with Russian President Medvedev. They have led negotiations for a new U.S.- Russian Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (START), which reduces the number of warheads and delivery systems on both sides.

Progress could be resisted!
The ratification of these treaties, which requires 67 votes in the U.S. Senate, is being resisted and this wonderful opportunity could be lost. It is resisted by the corporations who have profited generously from producing these weapons and delivery systems, and their well-funded lobbies, their subcontractors, their workers and their representatives in the Senate.

That resistance can only be overcome by the organized voice of the large majority of the American people who have repeatedly said that they want a nuclear-free world. It can be overcome by the mothers and grandmothers who want their children to grow up in a world freed of the nightmare of thousands of American and Russian weapons on high alert targeted on each other.  It is urgent that we be represented in Washington by Senators who realize that the preservation of life is more important than the profits of military suppliers.
